Kitab ul Hajj wal 'Umrah - 1 [page 399]

Linguistic and Shar'ii Meaning:

The terms Hajj or Hijj linguistically refers to making an intention to visit a particular place and to then travel to that place. The Shar'ii meaning of Hajj however, refers to the act of making an intention to visit the Ka'bah in order to honor and glorify it, and to perform certain specified and legislated acts while visiting the Ka'bah. (summarized from Fathur Rabbani, Fathul Bari etc.)

Virtues and Reward:

Allah ta'aala says in the Qur'an:

Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds. In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds. (3: 96-97)
There are several ahadith from the Prophet Muhammad (saws) on the virtues and rewards of performing Hajj. A few selected ahadith on the topic are presented below:

1.     The Prophet (saws) was asked: ‘Which is the most excellent deed’.  He replied: ‘Faith in Allah and His Prophet (saws)’. He was then asked:’ And then which deed?’ He replied: ‘Hajj Mabroor’.

There are several explanations for the term Hajj Mabroor, some of which are listed below:
·        A Hajj during which no sin was committed
·        An accepted Hajj
·        A Hajj which contains no Riya, desire for fame/praise, lustful acts, obscenity, fighting or argumentation
·        A Hajj after which a person returns better than he was before performing the Hajj and does not try to knowingly and intentionally commit sins

·        Hasan al Basri (rah) says that it refers to a Hajj after which a person turns away from the world and focusses his attention in seeking the Hereafter
