- Make the process of seeking Ilm pleasant and enjoyable. Don't have a negative, complaining attitude about your studies, tests and deliverables.
- It an honor to have been chosen by Allah (swt) to have access to Ilm and the opportunity to seek knowledge.
- It is a sign of immaturity to focus on minor hurdles and keep complaining about them.
- No self-pity or negativity. Focus on what can be done at this instant. A positive mental and emotional attitude is essential to do well in studies.
- Don't let other worldly activities, engagements and commitments to impede regular progress in studies.
- Ignore people who don't give you importance or don't treat you well. Possess emotional maturity and focus on your goals. Control your thoughts, emotions, tongue and behavior.
- Don't take the other extreme and abandon all social contact citing the excuse that I am focused on my studies and don't need to meet and interact with people.
- Manage your time and responsibilities. Don't burden others with additional work just because you have taken on the role of a student of Ilm. Your reward is with others, not from others - they don't need to do you any favors (neither should you seek them), just because you are a student of Ilm.
- Create a firm relationship with Allah subhanahu wa ta'aala. Make dua's to Allah for any issue you may face.
- The one whose today is not better than yesterday (in terms of his relationship with Allah), is doomed.
- The measure of whether one is making progress and benefitting from his studies is whether your relationship with Allah ta'aala is improving.
- Learn new things every day.
- Maintain a pleasant demeanor. Don't make people hate the seeking of Ilm through your stern behavior, especially when one is engaged in the acquisition of Ilm. Don't become a reason for others to avoid the Deen or seeking Ilm because of you.
- Don't Ihsan Jata on others, just because you are engaged in seeking Ilm.
- If any one aspect of our life is under-developed, and we are not exerting efforts to improve - whether in terms of our social engagements, our closeness to Allah ta'aala, our control over our words, emotions or behavior, our diligence in studies etc. - then it drags all of our efforts down and a single shortcoming, indeed, a single word/statement can be the cause of a person being flung into Hell.
- Don't make your akhlaq commercial and hypocritical - don't be a good person only to those who have something you need/want, or to gain some worldly benefit.
- The purpose of studies is to become a successful individual. The beneficiary of one's studies is completely oneself, and not anyone else.
- Revising one's lessons is essential to retain the material and to deepen understanding.
- Finish each day's tasks on its given day. Laa tu'ajjil 'amalal yaumi ilal ghad. Lil ghadyi 'amalun aakhar.
- Man Jadda wajada - He who strives and exerts himself, attains his objective
- If, due to unavoidable circumstances, you miss a day's tasks, use the first holiday to dedicate yourself to make up what you have missed.
